Pain Specialist

Dr. João Bonito Galacho could have devoted his life to the sea, pursuing his passion for sailing. Instead, he chose a more meaningful course: a career dedicated to relieving pain, ensuring safety, and improving the quality of life of his patients.

A graduate of the Faculty of Medicine of Lisbon, Dr. João completed his residency in Anesthesiology at Hospital de Santa Maria between 2016 and 2020. He worked there as a consultant anesthesiologist until 2023, before joining the Hospital das Caldas da Rainha in 2024.

Beyond his specialization in Anesthesiology, he also holds official competencies in Pain Medicine and in Emergency and Urgent Care, both awarded by the Portuguese Medical Association. These reflect his wide-ranging expertise, from high-stakes perioperative medicine to the long-term management of chronic conditions.

His particular clinical focus is the treatment of chronic pain, especially through minimally invasive procedures and neuromodulation techniques. For Dr. João, the doctor–patient relationship is itself therapeutic—built on honesty, trust, and shared understanding.

Outside of medicine, he finds balance in moments spent with family and friends, as well as in the occasional sailing trip. These are the anchors that bring perspective and energy to his professional life—ensuring he remains a thoughtful, grounded, and compassionate physician.
